My Father's Favorite Hawk

This beautiful little bird is an American Kestrel, which we always called just a Kestrel.

You can find them in the wild, but also in your own neighborhood looking for its food.

Another name which my father used besides Kestrel was "Chicken Hawk".

I think it is one of the most beautiful birds, and one of my father's favorites.

He named our small sail boat, Kestrel.

Happy Memories. :o)

Lovely bird! I’ve never seen one, but I would think my dad would know one if he saw it!

Oh, Nelia! I see from one bird book that a Kestrel is called a Sparrow Hawk and it is not seen in your area, but "may" be seen briefly in spring and autumn. **What do these bird maps know?! We have seen them all the time in our area, while we lived in Chicago area, and throughout my childhood in Ohio!
**FYI: My modern bird book calls the Kestrel a Sparrow Hawk, has no area maps, but says, it is "wide spread and common"!
If you see a small hawk, keep watch for it may just be a Kestrel! :o)
