Pollyanna Revisited

Back on March 8 this year I posted concerning the book, and the 1960 movie, Pollyanna.  Now check out Eternity Matters concerning the movie and be encouraged again.

The term “Pollyanna” is typically used to describe someone with an irrational optimism, but I thought the behavior of the character (an orphan of missionaries) was biblically grounded. She seemed to live out the meaning of turning the other cheek and of Philippians 4:12-13.

Philippians 4:12-13 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

>My wife is a glass half full person and I'm just the opposite. As I see it, all optimism, except in our salvation, is irrational. Fortunately my wife is more like Pollyanna than the average person. When my children were young, when the sun would be setting I would often point toward the setting sun and say, "this day is over, and it will never come again". My wife complained that that was too sad so she would always add cheerfully, "but tomorrow's a brand new day"!

Pollyanna has always had a convicting effect on me. I think I'll watch it again soon just to take another look.

Thank you for your comment, Dan. It made me smile, as my Beloved and I are very much like you described yourselves.

As each day passes, I am more convinced that we need to be more like Pollyanna while we wait for the Lord's return. Not as a game, but a way of life that can mold us into His image. Let's see life realistically, but at the same time, let's look for the good and glorify Him.

Thanks for the link! I enjoyed your other post on Pollyanna as well. The more I think about it, the more I like it. She's gotten a bad rap all these years! Blessings to you.
