Abuse is not romance

After years of knowing and walking alongside women who are abused, I am shaken by what will come from the acceptance of sexual violence in mainstream culture.

Great commentary by Landon at Entreatingfavor on "50 shades" and the effects of this type of violence in even our Christian culture.

Romans 12:1-2
Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God,
to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice,
acceptable to God,
which is your spiritual service of worship.

And do not be conformed to this world,
but be transformed by the renewing of your mind,
so that you may prove what the will of God is,
that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

From Landon's "50 shades" blog post:

NOTE: The National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCSE) has launched an aggressive national campaign against the controversial film, Fifty Shades of Grey. NCSE’s new webpage, fiftyshadesisabuse.com, highlights 50-plus ways that Fifty Shades harms and provides various actions that the public can take, including signing a boycott petition and joining the #50DollarsNot50Shades campaign, which calls on patrons to forgo the film and donate to women’s shelters instead.

Hi Jill,

Please forgive me in advance for my long comment. I am thankful to see you post on this topic. I have been greatly bothered in my spirit regarding 50 Shades, and not initially knowing what the movie was about, I assumed it was just an obscene story about a philanderer. I tried to quickly dismiss my concerns, but something about it kept troubling me... so I did some homework, and thanks to many faithful brothers and sisters in the Lord, I got the answers for which my soul was searching.

When I finally learned the plot, I was completely horrified. I couldn't have even imagined that the movie glorifies domestic abuse by euphemizing and "romanticizing" it. The movie also misconstrues what male headship/female submission should be, and teaches a counterfeit story of redemption. The male protagonist in the movie is the complete antithesis of what the Lord would have a man be, and the relationship between the male and female is warped beyond comprehension. The counterfeit redemption is a tremendous lie: that if a woman endures enough beating, humiliation, and torture, she can win the heart of her abuser. First, abuse is not love! Second, only Christ can change a heart of stone into a heart of flesh.

I fear for what each successive generation in our country is going to be exposed to, given how far we've already fallen. God help us all.
