Confession seeks pardon from God,
not amnesty.
Pardon accepts guilt;
amnesty, derived from the same Greek word as amnesia, "forgets" the alleged offense without imputing guilt.
Confession admits wrong and seeks forgiveness;
amnesty denies wrong and claims innocence.
